Questions, answered
Everything you might want to know before trusting Oona with your family — especially around safety, your children, and your privacy.
Safety & privacy
Is my family's information private?
Yes. Oona is a closed, invite-only space for your household — only the people you invite can see your family's information. We never sell your data and there are no ads.
Can strangers contact my children?
No. Everything — messaging, the feed, lists — happens entirely within your household. There are no public profiles, no friend requests, and no way for anyone outside your family to find or message your children.
Where is our data stored, and is it encrypted?
Your data lives on secure, reputable cloud infrastructure (encrypted in transit and at rest), and we handle it in line with the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020. Full detail is in our Privacy Policy.
Who can see the family vault and medical info?
Only the adults in your household. The family vault — medical, emergency and document info — is restricted to parent/adult members; children can't open it.
Your children
How do kids sign in without an email?
They don't need one. Children log in with your family code, their first name, and a PIN you set — no email or phone number required for kids.
Can parents keep an eye on their kids' messages?
Yes, if you choose to. There's an optional oversight setting (Settings → Household) that lets parents read conversations that include a child, for safeguarding. It's off by default — your call.
Is Oona suitable for younger children?
Yes. It's built for the whole family, with calm, accessible and neurodiversity-friendly options, and content kept appropriate for the youngest member.
The AI assistant
Is the AI assistant safe for children to use?
Yes. It's family-friendly by design, with safety filters that block adult, violent or unsafe content, and it's instructed to keep every reply appropriate for the youngest person who might read it.
What happens to what we type into the assistant?
Your messages are sent to Google's Gemini to generate a reply, and a short, name-free note about your family's makeup (ages and roles) helps tailor answers. Your chats are not used to train AI models.
Can I switch the AI off?
Yes — the assistant is a feature you can turn off for your household in Household setup.
Plans & billing
How much does Oona cost?
