Everything you need to get the most out of Oona — set-up, the day-to-day features, and how to get a hand if you need one.
Getting started
- Create your household. Sign up with email or "Continue with Google", give your home a name, pick your colour, and you're in.
- Invite your family. Go to Family members → Invite. Adults join with a link or 6-character code; kids join with your family code, their name and a PIN (no email needed for children).
- Add it to your home screen. Oona works like an app — on your phone, open the browser menu and choose "Add to Home Screen". See the install guide.
- Set up the Wall display. Open Wall display on a spare tablet, mount it on the fridge, and the whole family can see the day at a glance.
The calendar
One shared calendar everyone can see, colour-coded by person. Tap a day to add an event, set a time and place, and choose who it's for. Events show up on the Home screen, the Wall display, and in reminders.
Lists & shopping
Create lists the whole family adds to — the supermarket list auto-sorts so shopping is faster. Tick items off as you go; everyone's list stays in sync instantly.
Chores & pocket money
- Create chores under Chores, assign them to family members, and set whether they repeat.
- Give a chore a value and completing it pays pocket money automatically — no nagging, no spreadsheets.
- Track balances and payouts under Pocket money.
Meals
Plan the week's dinners in one go, build a recipe library, and push ingredients straight to your shopping list. Tonight's dinner shows on Home and the Wall display.
Notice board, Feed & Messages
- Notice board — pin the things everyone should see ("Kids at Nana's till Sunday").
- Family feed — a private, algorithm-free place to share photos and moments, just for your household.
- Messages — family chat that isn't social media. Parents can enable optional oversight of messages that include a child.
Feelings & Wishlists
Feelings lets everyone do a gentle daily check-in so you can see how the family's travelling. Wishlists keep gift ideas in one place for birthdays and Christmas.
Ask Oona (the assistant)
Tap Assistant to ask for dinner ideas, a plan for a rainy day, or help thinking something through. It's powered by Google's Gemini; it can be wrong, so use your judgement for anything important. We never use your family's content to train AI models.
The Wall display
A calm, glanceable dashboard for a tablet on the fridge or bench — today's plan, chores, the shopping list, what's for dinner, the notice board and more. Open Wall display from the menu and leave it running. For what tablet to use, which mount to buy in NZ, and step-by-step set-up, see the wall display set-up guide.
Family vault
A secure place for the important stuff — medical notes, emergency contacts and key documents. The vault is restricted to the adults in your household; children can't open it.
